About Travel Envy Hub
Hi, I’m Amanda and I’m Not Your Typical Travel Blogger
You know those perfectly posed Instagram travel influencers who make everything look effortless? Yeah, that’s not me.
I’m the anxious traveler who white knuckles every flight but gets on the plane anyway because crystal clear water is worth it. I’m a former Air Force photographer who joined at 18 just to travel and take photos. And I’m definitely the person who’s made every rookie travel mistake in the book so you don’t have to.
How a High School Kid With No Money Ended Up Here
I fell in love with travel as a teenager flipping through National Geographic magazines, completely mesmerized by tropical beach photos. My aptitude test even said I should be a photographer. But here’s the thing: I couldn’t afford college. My mom was a single parent working two jobs, and art school wasn’t in the cards.
So I joined the Air Force. But ONLY as a photographer. They tried everything to change my mind (seriously, $40k is a lot of money), but I held out. Five years later, I’d traveled all over the US and overseas, but nothing:and I mean nothing:prepared me for Okinawa, Japan.
The Beach That Ruined Me Forever
Okinawa spoiled me. The water was so clear I could see 25+ feet down. So calm and buoyant I could float upright with both hands out of the water. The coral reefs and marine life made me feel like I was living inside a National Geographic documentary.
After that? Myrtle Beach didn’t cut it. California beaches couldn’t compare. Even the Gulf Coast fell short (except Destin/Fort Walton Beach on a good day). I became obsessed with finding that same magic: snorkel able beaches with visibility that takes your breath away.
The Mistakes That Made Me Better
Let me tell you about the time I missed a flight connection and ended up in a sketchy hotel with literal bullet holes in the wall. This was pre-smartphone era, exhausted and alone, making terrible decisions at midnight. The cab driver the next morning asked me why I picked THAT hotel. I didn’t know. But I learned.
Or how about my wedding in Cozumel? Beautiful swim out room that got robbed (cash, souvenirs, wallet: everything but our passports). Wedding photos corrupted on the photographer’s card. My husband got Montezuma’s revenge so bad we had to call a doctor to the room. And we didn’t have travel insurance because I thought it was a scam like extended car warranties.
Spoiler: Travel insurance is NOT a scam. You need it.
These disasters taught me more than any perfect trip ever could. Now I’m an over-researcher. I don’t book anything without personal recommendations or extensive reviews. And I’m here to share what I’ve learned so you don’t have to learn it the hard way.
What I’m NOT
I’m not the “find you the cheapest deal” person. I’m the “find you the best VALUE” person. Big difference.
I’m not going to recommend a resort just because they sponsored me. If it sucks, I’ll tell you it sucks.
I’m not doing the same bus excursions as everyone else. Give me the beach locals go to. The restaurants locals eat at. The hidden spots that don’t show up on the first page of Google.
And I’m definitely not the influencer who makes you feel bad about your life choices or financial situation. More on that in a second.
What I Actually Care About
Service. It doesn’t cost anything extra to treat people like they matter. I’ve experienced incredible hospitality at budget hotels and terrible service at luxury resorts. How staff treat you says everything about a place, and I notice. I also notice how YOU treat staff:and if you’re rude to servers or hotel workers, we’re not going to be friends.
Value. Not “cheap.” VALUE. Getting the most wow factor and memories for whatever budget you’re working with.
Less crowds. I don’t want to fight for a lounge chair or wait in line for mediocre food. Life’s too short.
Crystal-clear water. This is non-negotiable for me. If I can’t see my feet, I’m not interested.
The Real Reason I Started This
For years, I posted travel photos on Facebook and Instagram. And for years, I got comments like “must be nice” from people who assumed we were rich.
Here’s the truth: We’re not rich. I don’t get my nails or lashes done. I don’t drink expensive coffee out: I make it at home. I don’t have designer purses or name brand shoes. My car is paid off and I plan to keep it that way.
I just prioritize differently. I’ll fly Spirit, Frontier, or Allegiant (my favorite!) any day if it means I can upgrade to a swim out suite at my destination. I take advantage of military and veteran discounts whenever they’re offered. I plan well in advance and save aggressively for the actual place I’m going to, not the flight getting me there.
I pick my battles. A budget airline seat is uncomfortable for a few hours, but it’s usually direct. A mediocre resort room is disappointing for days. I know which one matters more.
But my husband asked me to stop posting our trips because it made people uncomfortable. And I did, for a while. Until I realized: Why am I hiding MY life to make someone else feel better about theirs?
So I decided to make travel my job. Now when people ask, I can say “I’m working.” And honestly? It’s the best decision I ever made. I get to do what I love, help people plan unforgettable trips, and not feel guilty about it.
What You Can Expect From Me
Honest reviews. If a resort is overhyped, I’ll tell you. If a cruise port is underwhelming, you’ll know.
Real talk about anxiety. Flying terrifies me. Traveling stresses me out. I do it anyway because the beaches are worth it. If you’re anxious too, you’re in good company.
Beach obsession. I will talk endlessly about water clarity, snorkeling, and why some beaches are better than others. You’ve been warned.
No BS recommendations. I recommend places I’d send my own family. If I wouldn’t book it for my mom, I won’t recommend it to you.
The good AND the bad. Perfect trips don’t exist. I’ll tell you what went wrong so you can avoid the same mistakes.
